Back to school
In 2004, as many of the children were not attending school, members of the Amaoti Community Development Project (an Indlela project) initiated a Back-to-School programme. Sponsors were approached to sponsor children so that new school uniforms and equipment could be purchased enabling the children to return to school.
To date over 450 children are being sponsored. We employ four youth workers, who were previously unemployed members of the Amaoti community, and have trained and equipped them to work with these children.
They work closely with the teachers and the children and carry out home visits to monitor the family situation. Currently workers and volunteers are also involved in assisting a number of the families in the Back-to-School programme with government grants and identity document applications.
