In response to the desperate need in Amaoti, a feeding scheme began in November 2001, aimed at young children within the community. Over time the socio-economic conditions in Amaoti have worsened and as a result our interaction with the community has increased.
We are also involved in feeding approximately 50 school children each day – at our aftercare programme. We also have 20 child headed families in crisis that need food parcels delivered on a regular basis. Of these 20 families we are currently able to feed 17, due to a lack of funding. Each family receives the basics; sugar, maize flour, rice, oil as well as fresh vegetables – onions, cabbages, butternut squash, and tinned food. This is currently funded by the Red Bag Initiative run by The Rock & Harvest Churches.
Our vision is to feed many more families with children who are known to us as Orphaned and Vulnerable Children (OVC). We also want to see more self sufficiency by teaching the people how to ‘fish and be fed for a lifetime’.
